Suez Canal Sharply Raises Transit Surcharges from July 15

🚢 SUEZ CANAL SHARPLY RAISES TRANSIT SURCHARGES FROM JULY 15

The Suez Canal Authority SCA will apply a new transit surcharge schedule from July 15, 2026, marking the first broad adjustment in three years to temporary surcharges added on top of basic canal dues.

According to the announcement, most vessel categories transiting the Suez Canal will face higher surcharges. Passenger vessels are the only category not affected by this adjustment.

📌 Key surcharge changes include:

• Loaded crude oil and petroleum product tankers: from 25% to 37% of basic dues
• Ballast tankers: from 15% to 27%
• LPG carriers and chemical tankers: from 20% to 32%
• LNG carriers: from 7% to 19%
• Dry bulk carriers: from 10% to 22%
• Container vessels: surcharge set at 12%
• General cargo, heavy-lift, ro-ro and several other vessel types: from 14% to 26%

SCA said the surcharges are temporary measures based on current shipping market conditions and may be adjusted or cancelled depending on future developments.

The adjustment comes as vessel traffic through the Suez Canal gradually recovers, while security risks in the Red Sea and wider Middle East remain elevated.
